Fuyuko Irie is a freelance copy editor in her mid-thirties, living and working alone in Tokyo. Isolated and withdrawn, her only regular human contact is her lively editor, Hijiri—her opposite in nearly every way. One day, pausing in front of a shop window, Fuyuko catches her own reflection and sees a woman she barely recognizes: awkward, lonely, and stuck in a life that seems to be passing her by. In that moment, she decides something must change.
As Fuyuko cautiously begins to open herself to new experiences—and new people—long-buried memories resurface, pulling her into an emotional reckoning. Her quiet transformation soon takes unpredictable turns, challenging the boundaries of who she thought she was and what she’s willing to feel.
Poignant, subtle, and deeply human, All the Lovers in the Night is an intimate portrait of solitude, connection, and the fragile courage it takes to seek out light in the dark. It’s a novel that may make you laugh, perhaps cry, and ultimately reflect on what it means to choose life, even when it hurts.
