As she revisits the city, she is overwhelmed by memories of the past, particularly of three girls who inducted her into the brutal, unspoken rules of childhood and its hidden landscape of intimacy, desire, and betrayal. Confronting these recollections, Elaine is forced to reckon with who she has been and who she has become: as a daughter, a lover, an artist, and a woman. Ultimately, she must face her past in order to free herself from its lingering hold.
