In Either/Or, Søren Kierkegaard explores what it means to live a meaningful life through the contrasting voices of two characters: “A,” a young man devoted to aesthetic pleasure, and Judge Vilhelm, who argues for the value of an ethical, responsible life. Through reflections on topics ranging from Mozart and drama to boredom and desire, the book examines two competing ways of being. Its most famous section, The Seducer’s Diary, portrays the calculated seduction and eventual abandonment of a young woman. Both philosophically rich and psychologically penetrating, Either/Or is a masterful meditation on the tension between pleasure and duty, freedom and commitment, irony and moral seriousness.
