Interior design held deep significance for Klimt, and many of his paintings were conceived for specific environments. This beautifully produced volume brings that dimension to life, showing how his most celebrated canvases once appeared in private residences and public exhibitions alike. Iconic portraits such as Adele Bloch-Bauer I, Emilie Flöge, and Sonja Knips; provocative allegories including Nuda Veritas and Hope I; and lush landscapes are all presented as they were displayed during Klimt’s lifetime. Vivid reproductions of the paintings are juxtaposed with archival black-and-white photographs of the original interiors, overlaid with the artworks in color for striking visual context.
Accompanying essays by renowned Klimt scholar Tobias G. Natter provide insightful commentary on each major work—its origins, setting, and patrons—while illuminating Klimt’s relationships and his place within the cultural fabric of fin-de-siècle Vienna.
