In 1865, on a windswept peninsula jutting into the Atlantic, Tomás and his young son, Liam, work tirelessly on the monumental Ordnance Survey project to map all of Ireland. In a country still scarred and depopulated by the Great Hunger, their task is as emotionally fraught as it is physically demanding. Tomás is determined that his maps will carry the truth of that devastation—its absences, its ghosts.
With British officers due to arrive and expecting the work to be complete, Tomás is abruptly thrown off course by a disturbing encounter in a nearby copse. What he sees there shatters him, altering the course of his life and the lives of those he loves. Liam, only ten years old, is left frightened and confused by the sudden break in his father’s stoic exterior.
As Tomás begins to unravel, Liam must face a terrifying question: what could have cracked his father so completely—and how can a child finish the map and lead them both safely home?
