Over the last fifty years, Marina Abramović has become one of the most acclaimed and influential figures in contemporary art, widely recognized as a pioneer of performance art. In fall 2023, the Royal Academy in London presents a landmark retrospective spanning her entire career—an ambitious exhibition that includes re-performances of her most iconic and provocative works alongside new pieces created specifically for the show.
Developed in close collaboration with Abramović herself, this major publication explores the themes, questions, and controversies that her work continues to provoke: How far can an artist push their body and mind in pursuit of artistic truth? What is the audience’s role in completing a performance? And how can performance art endure beyond the moment of its enactment?
Innovatively designed, the book includes integrated digital features: readers can use an image-recognition app to unlock video clips of original performances, bringing the work to life beyond the page.
