Reviews

"In this story, as the chief character is internally melodramatic, the story itself ceases to be merely melodramatic, and partakes of true dreams."

T.S. Elliot

Summary

An English aristocrat, Lord Montbarry, abandons his fiancée for an enigmatic countess with a dark past, before moving with her and her brother, Baron Rivar – who is rumoured to be her lover, and is fond of gambling and alchemy – into a decayed Venetian palazzo. An Italian servant disappears, and his wife receives a note containing one thousand pounds.

As the palazzo is transformed into a luxury hotel, all these strands begin to come together, yet strange and macabre events are occurring, and the dead seem unable to rest.

Contains notes on the text, Wilkie Collins’s life and works and a select bibliography.

“To a man born without conscience, a soul-stricken man must seem ridiculous. To a criminal, honesty is foolish. You must not forget that a monster is only a variation, and that to a monster the norm is monstrous.”

John Steinbeck

“I knew when I had looked for a long time that I had hardly begun to see.”

Nan Shepard

“What a mistake, above all, it had been to believe that I couldn’t live without him, when for a long time I had not been at all certain that I was alive with him.”

Elena Ferrante

“Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else.”

George Orwell

“How short a time a person had to be alive, he thought. How long to be dead.”

Kate Grenville
